STENCILS AND STREET ART

Anyone can notice while Walking through Weimar that there are plenty of street art to be found.

After seeing many beautiful buildings covered with ugly tags and uglier graffiti I somehow started liking the form of street art which is called “stencils”. One of world’s most iconic and famous stencil artist is an unknown man called Banksy, who has taken street art to a new level.

To my surprise there are plenty of imaginative and somewhat ‘clean’ stencil art to be found in Weimar. I have heard that it is also quite popular method to draw graffiti nowadays in all around Germany. I do not want to say that I totally accept this kind of street art, it is still vandalism and harms other people’s property. Nevertheless I still consider them as a better form of graffiti and a part of today’s urban community.

Unfortunately this is the only positive thing that I am able to say about the local graffiti. There are many locations also in Weimar where it is allowed to express yourself by the form of graffiti art. All the other places, such as historical buildings, abandoned factories and beautiful houses that wear a smudgy and unimaginative tag (that no-one apart from the hooligan can’t even read) make me angry and frustrated. The street art is here to stay, and also the high expenses cleaning them.

The Pictures have been taken in Weimar and also in Erfurt.
