the old mill

This place still creeps me out. It is located in a very central place of Weimar, just next to the busy shopping mall Atrium. From the looks of it there has not been any activity in several decades, everything seems worn out or destroyed by the nature. The roof has partly fallen down, the walls are filled with graffiti, everything is covered in dust, soil and rust.

Me and my friends discovered this place by an accident, and later we returned to take some photographs of it. It was maybe the fourth time for me to go there when I met the owner. He told me a very interesting story of the run-down building, which turned out to be an old mill.

According to the owner the place was built during the time of Martin Luther, which dates back to the 16th century. It worked as a mill for several different kind of crops, and next to the mill the original owner build houses for the people working there. During the centuries many big catastrophes struck the mill, such as floods and fires. One of the floods killed at least eight people in 1800's, and the latest flood struck in 1994. That time the water level rose almost 1,6 meters, but no-one was fortunately killed.

The owner told that his family has lived in the area since 18th century. He has renovated the living areas up to modern standard, but still you may find lots of signs from the history.

I never dared to ask what he is planning to do with the run down premises, but maybe one day there will be new life inside of the brick walls.

What confuses me about the place is that in the back of the building there is some sort of a hippie meeting point, some creative art and signs of a leisure place. The owner didn't strike as a person who would buid such a place, a decent looking man in his 60's. This makes the place even more mysterious and also a great place to search for some inspiration.

The pictures were taken in September, November and December. They lead from the outer walls to the indoors of the building, through the one door that is open. At the back yard the garden stands next to the flowing river, and all the small details of the garden and the building makes you feel out of the place.

I think that this is one of the most bizarre and interesting things I have discovered in Weimar.
